Last Days of Summer | South Salem Family Photographer

Bittersweet – a day we dread but also a day we celebrate is the one when our oldest child leaves home for college (or work, or to see the world!). Whenever my friends have this separation impending, I gently (but passionately!) suggest they have a professional photographer capture this milestone in their life. In those last days you wish would stretch on, there is a flurry of to-do’s and to-buy’s and yet, what is most needed is a time to just BE. I had the honor of photographing a friend who took my advice to heart. I could tell how hard it was going to be to let her daughter go, even though she put on a brave game face and made a point to stay cheerful and positive so her daughter’s heart would not be overly torn at the thought of leaving home.

Here are the images from that afternoon in the sun, taken near their home in beautiful South Salem, NY. This is a family that works hard, plays hard and loves MUCH. Thank you for letting me capture a little bit of your heaven…your sweet family.

Every slideshow I create has its unique spirit and feel – this one was graced by the song, “I Wish You Well”, from the latest CD by Renee & Jeremy, two amazingly generous and creative musicians, Renee Stahl & Jeremy Toback. Their CD is titled ‘C’mon’ and it’s infectiously fun and sweet. Check it out here.

Here’s the slideshow “I Wish You Well” – you can watch it fullscreen by clicking the box with little arrows on the slideshow control bar. Enjoy!

A Beautiful Autumn Day in Waveny | New Canaan Family Photographer

After weeks of overcast weather, we lucked out and got a day of full sun for this sweet family session. It was so much fun that I didn’t want to stop! But hungry kids won out and we ended the session with a walk into the sunset. I loved that this photo session was a gift from Mitch to his wife Bonnie. I don’t think there is a better gift!

A tribute to an unforgettable dog….Gunner

I talk to him when I’m lonesome like; and I’m sure he understands.
When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands;
then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat.
For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes,
but never a friend like that.
~W. Dayton Wedgefarth

Several weeks ago, I had the honor of photographing Gunner, a champion Vizla, who in 1999 was a finalist in the Westminster Kennel Club show in NYC.  For more than 12 years he has been evoted friend and companion to the Fischetti Family – dear friends of mine who agreed to let me try to capture Gunner’s wise soul, sweet spirit and beautiful form.  Every time I came to their home, Gunner would greet me calmly, wait for me to sit down and then plunk his head in my lap.  I knew I had to photograph this gorgeous canine.  On a whim one day in early April, I brought my camera along when visited their home.  I said, “Let’s do this.  Let’s photograph Gunner.”  He was the perfect subject and I knew then I would be spoiled for life because I don’t think I’ll ever meet another dog as well-behaved and obedient as he was.  A true gentleman.  It was a short session, but I think we captured some of his greatness, his soulfulness.

Little did we know that within the week, Gunner would be gone – On April 7th, he laid down and gently passed away, apparently from a stroke.  When my friends shared the news with me, they sent along a note of tribute that said…”The love, energy and devotion he brought into our home cannot be replaced.  Gunner had a long and wonderful life and what we gave to him was returned a hundredfold to us….To us, Gunner’s most important accomplishment was the joy he brought into our lives.  He will be greatly missed.  Goodbye, old friend.”  Much love to you, my friends!

Our animal friends play such an important part in our daily lives.  Take the time to document how much they mean to you and your family.  You’ll be so glad you did.
